Upcoming 2021/2022 Volunteer Opportunities


Back-to-School BBQ: Date TBD
BBQ Project Manager needed. Duties include: Managing a large team of volunteers to solicit food donations, man grills and food tables, clean up (includes trash removal and washing dishes used by families), coordinate entertainment for the kids and families, overall event management including set up and tear down. This chair position will require planning and recruiting several parents to help.


Art Fair Parking: Sept. 17-19
AF Parking Coordinators:
Christian Lenz/Amanda Sywsgood
Pre-plans shift needs and organizes Sign-up Genius to recruit parents, teachers and sixth grade students. (Look for additional support from sixth grade parents, as a portion of the money collected goes to MMUN)
Coordinates team of people for shifts to cover the event. 
Responsible for cash handling and providing directions to the people parking cars.


Communications: Year round commitment.
Communications Director: Jen Nelson. Duties include: PTA website maintenance, Mail Chimp email distribution and Facebook PTA page creation and maintenance, other duties as assigned with written or digital communications. IT experience not necessary, but definitely appreciated.

New Parent Liaison: Year round commitment with focus on BTS and events throughout the year that may need further communication specific to new parents. Works with communications coordinator to send out periodic emails.

New Parent ambassador needed.

Room Parent Coordinator: Year round commitment
21/22 Coordinator needed. Duties include: Working with individual teachers to assign room parents for each classroom. Communicating with room parents to coordinate holiday parties or other classroom specific functions that need parent support.

Health & Wellness: Year round commitment, 4-5 events per year.
Health & Wellness coordinator needed.
Duties include: Planning Ride/walks to school. Potential off-campus activities like open gym nights or skating parties. Potential virtual activities like guided yoga, meditation or cooking demonstrations. Could work with the fundraising team and school administration to coordinate school dances or movie nights.
Must be comfortable engaging with kids and families in virtual and in-person situations.

Garden: Year round commitment with focus on seasonal growing times.
Garden expert: Sarah Snodgrass

Still in need of volunteers that can be available on weekends throughout the summer to ensure the gardens are watered, maintained and harvested. Green thumb is a plus, but not required.

Hospitality: Year round commitment, specifically providing food for monthly in-person meetings. *While it has yet to be determined whether or not in-person meetings will resume with the new school year, we'd still like to have a team in place.
Hospitality ambassador needed. Do you love to create food, coordinate take out orders and/or solicit food donations from local restaurants? This is a great opportunity to lead a team of volunteers to feed the parents of Border Star at monthly meetings. All expenses incurred are reimbursed by the PTA, time commitment varies based on menu for the month, set up and tear down is part of the team responsibilities.


Yearbook: Year round commitment with focus on year-end deadline to collect photos, produce yearbook with chosen vendor and distribute yearbooks. Yearbook Specialist needed.


Teacher Appreciation: May 2-6, 2022
Teacher Appreciation ambassador needed. The ideal appreciation ambassador will need to be prepared to shower our teachers and staff with love and appreciation for the designated week of May 2-6. There will be pre-planning required and needs 3-4 additional volunteers to implement the plans. All expenses associated with this event will be reimbursed by the PTA.

District Advisory Committee (DAC): Year round 
commitment, specifically for monthly meetings (1-1.5 hour). The DAC is a group of caregivers and community members that serves KCPS in an advisory capacity by providing information and support to parents, parent organizations, school district administration and the school board. Our schools can’t do it alone; we need the involvement and support of engaged caregivers and community members to succeed.
